Braunvieh Cattle

The Braunvieh is a breed of cattle that originated in Switzerland. They were originally imported to the United States during the 1800s and a modern breed was formed, the Brown Swiss. The Brown Swiss have been crossed back with the European stock of Braunvieh. The Braunvieh were reintroduced to the United States in 1983 by Harlan Doeschot from Firth, Nebraska.

The Braunvieh is a docile but easy to work with breed. It has excellent milking ability, fine beef quality and reproductive efficiency. It can be a variety of shades of brown but the most common is mousy brown.  The nose always has a lighter colored ring around it, which characterizes it from different breeds.

Braunvieh is German for “brown cattle”.
