Manchester Terrier

The Manchester Terrier is a Terrier breed which originated in England as early as the 16th century. It is considered the oldest of all known terrier breeds. The breed originated as a rat killer when a Whippet was crossed with a cross-bred Terrier to produce a coursing Terrier. It was used equally for rodent killing and rabbit coursing, until the prior became illegal in England.

The Manchester Terrier comes in two varieties: the toy Manchester Terrier and the standard Manchester Terrier. The standard variety weighs 12 to 22 pounds and its ears can be erect, button, or cropped while the toy variety weighs less than 12 pounds and always has naturally erect ears. Besides their size difference and ears, the two types should be identical. The breed has a short, smooth black and tan coat, thus its original name ““ the Black and Tan. In England, the two varieties are represented as separate breeds; the toy type is known as the English Toy Terrier.
