Plott Hound

The Plott Hound is a large breed originally bred in the North Carolina mountains for boar hunting. Its ancestors were brought from Germany to the U.S., and the breed was named after the brothers that brought them. The breed originated around 1750, and it is a legendary hunting dog and the only breed known to have originated in North Carolina. It is excellent at tracking and fighting its prey, making it a favorite of large game hunters. It is the state breed of North Carolina.

The Plott Hound appears athletic, agile and muscular. It stands 20 to 28 inches tall and weighs 40 to 80 pounds. It is moderately proportionate. The coat of the breed is hard and smooth and can be nearly any shade of brindle. It has an intelligent, confident expression at all times.

The breed is incredibly loyal as well as alert. It is an aggressive hunter with an even disposition. Its bark is bugle-like, and makes a good alert for its hunting companions.
