Russian Heavy Draft Horse

The Russian Heavy Draft is a breed of horse originating in the former Soviet Union and officially registered in 1952. It was developed by crossbreeding Russian mares with warmblood and draft horses like Orlov Trotter, Percheron and Ardennes in the mid-1880s.

It is short and muscular with a thick mane and tail. The neck is well crested and thick. Its average height is 59 inches and reaches maturity earlier than most other breeds. The legs are short and lightly feathered, ideal for pulling and using over rough terrain.

The Russian Heavy Draft is agile, energetic and mild tempered. It can tolerate cold temperatures and is able to pull more weight to body mass than any other Soviet breed of that era.
