Blue-eyed Darner, Aeshna multicolor

The blue-eyed darner (Aeshna multicolor or Rhionaeschna multicolor) is a species of dragonfly that can be found in North and Central America. The range of this dragonfly includes Texas, the Dakotas, and Panama. It can be found at low elevations near ponds, lakes, and marshes.

The blue-eyed darner reaches an average length between 2.5 to 2.75 inches and both males and females have blue eyes. Males are typically dark brown or black-brown in color, with two blue stripes occurring along the top of the thorax and blue spots occurring along the abdomen. This species can be seen at the beginning of spring and it consumes small insects in mid-flight.
