Black Clubtail, Hagenius brevistylus

The black clubtail (Hagenius brevistylus), also known as the black dragon or dragonhunter, is a species of dragonfly that can be found in eastern areas of the United States and southern areas of Canada. This species is the largest in its range, reaching an average body length of 3.3 inches and it is the sole member of its genus, Hagenius. Males and females are black and yellow in color with green eyes, and males can be distinguished by their abdomens, which they curl back and forth while flying. Unlike other dragonfly species, the nymphs of this species are flat and reside in leaf litter near streams, instead of in the water.  Adults consume large flying insects like darner dragonflies and butterflies.
