Hucul (Carpathian Pony)

The Hucul or Carpathian Pony is a breed of draft horse that was originally found in the Carpathian Mountains. The Hucul is considered the most direct descendant of the now extinct Tarpan. It is named after the small ethnic group of Hutsuls. However, the horse breed is much older than the Hutsul people.

This heavy horse possesses great endurance and hardiness. They are usually calm and are used for both trail riding and pulling timber in otherwise inaccessible forested areas. They are brown, grey or dark grey.

At one point this species was nearly extinct, but has made a dramatic comeback due to major breeding efforts. Now over 1,000 individuals live in Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Czech Republic, and Ukraine.
