Scolopendra heros is a centipede that can be found in northern areas of Mexico and in southern areas of the United States. Its range extends from Arizona and New Mexico westward to Missouri and Arkansas, reaching into Mexico in the south. This species can reach an average body length of 6.5 inches, although individuals reaching 8 inches are not uncommon. It has 21 to 23 legs and can vary in color. Its coloration is used to warn predators. It typically emerges from its underground home on cloudy days, preferring to remain hidden on sunny days.
