California Spangled Cat
The California Spangled Cat was a rare and expensive cat bred to resemble a spotted wildcat. The breed only lasted for about a decade becoming extinct in the 1990s. The popularity of two similar breeds, the Ocicat and the Bengal caused the demand for the breed to dwindle.
The California Spangled Cat was a crossbreed of several breeds including the American and British Shorthair as well as the Abyssinian. Despite the appearance of a wildcat, the breed was completely domestic.
An anthropologist named Louis Leakey motivated a scriptwriter named Paul Casey to breed a domestic cat resembling a small leopard when he was inspired by the poaching death of a leopard. He wanted to emphasize preservation of the leopard by creating a domestic cat that looked almost identical to the real thing.
