The Alano Español (also known as the Spanish Bulldog or the Spanish Alano) is a large dog, 23 to 25 inches tall and weighing 70 to 90 pounds. The Alano Español has an athletic appearance and a well proportioned, strong body structure. The rib cage is arched with the stomach retracting inward for a more athletic appearance. Its hindquarters are toned; it can clear almost any obstacle without having to expend much energy. The neck of the Alano Español is wide and strong, as are the jaws with their reverse-scissors bite. The Alano Español can come in several colors such as brindle, fawn, red, black and brindle and sable wolf.

The Alano Español requires a good deal of activity and is very reliable; it can make a very good guard or watch dog. The Alano Español typically lives to 11 to 14 years of age.

The Alano is part of a legacy left by the Alani tribe – nomads in the Iberian Peninsula famous for their dogs. The Alano Español is a descendant of those dogs, dogs that were once used in the “Corridas” of the Bull Ring. The breed was considered extinct in 1963, but some veterinary medicine students and Alano enthusiasts set to work recuperating this mythical breed in the 1970s and 1980s.
