Beauceron
The Beauceron is a French herding dog, also known as the French Shorthaired Shepherd. It originated in the plains region near the Seine River. Its regional name can be somewhat misleading, as it was found throughout northern France rather than just in the Beauce.
The Beauceron is typically between 24 and 28 inches tall and weighs 20 to 39 pounds. Its coat is short and smooth, generally black and tan or black and harlequin. There is a slight fringe on its legs and tail where the hair is longer. The Beauceron has a double dew claw, forming ‘thumbs’ on each rear leg. Most breeds may or may not have dew claws, and if they do, many owners remove them. This separates the Beauceron from other breeds.
The Beauceron is versatile; it can be a herder and protector, messenger or transport dog, or a family pet. It is very protective of children, friendly, calm and easily trained.
