Belgian Shepherd (Tervuren)
The Belgian Shepherd (Tervuren) is a variety of Belgian Shepherd recognized by its thick mahogany coat with a black overlay. It is a medium sized breed, generally standing between 24 and 26 inches high and weighing 65 pounds. The Tervuren has a double coat, and regular brushing is necessary. The coat should be slightly hard and lies flat against the body.
The breed is not generally recommended for first-time pet owners because it is high maintenance – not only with grooming but also with activity. The Tervuren is a highly energetic working breed that needs plenty of attention and a job to do. It makes a wonderful companion and watch dog if properly socialized. The breed is loyal to the point that if a dog is extremely close to its owner, it may be aloof when it comes to other people or guests. The Tervuren is extremely trainable and intelligent. It is a fairly rare breed, however it is still well-established.
