Aulonocara
Aulonocara is a genus of cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi in east Africa. All Aulonocara species are all maternal mouth brooders and females hold the young in their mouths for at least 21 days. There are 23 recognized Aulonocara species, though numerous subspecies or races also exist. In the aquarium hobby, Aulonocara species are also know as Peacock cichlids due to the variety of color these fishes display.
They are best kept in an aquarium with other medium sized non-aggressive Malawi cichlids (But avoid keeping them with aggressive Mbunas). Most Alunocaras have the same demands and can be kept together in an aquarium. However, it is highly likely the genus will cross breed if kept together and it is therefore recommended not to keep more than one species. Their aquarium should have a lot of open space for the Aulonocaras to swim in and a lot of caves where fish can hide, rest or establish territories. Only one male should be kept unless the aquarium is large enough to support several territories.
