Behavioral and Brain Sciences

Behavioral and Brain Sciences is a peer-reviewed scientific journal of Open Peer Commentary established in 1978 by Stevan Harnad and published by Cambridge University Press. Harnad modeled this publication on the journal Current Anthropology (which was established in 1959 by Sol Tax of the University of Chicago).

The journal publishes “target articles” followed by up to 30 or more peer commentaries and the authors’ response. It covers all areas of the bio-behavioral and cognitive sciences: psychology, neuroscience, behavioral biology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, linguistics, philosophy. Articles are judged by four or more referees to be of sufficient importance and interdisciplinary scope to merit Open Peer Commentary.

This journal was issued quarterly until 1997, when, due to popularity, the authors switched it to a bimonthly publication. It is indexed in the following services: Current Contents, Sociological Abstracts, Brain Information Service, Psychological Abstracts, Animal Behavior Abstracts, Neurosciences Abstracts, Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, Excerpta Medica, Current Awareness in Biological Sciences, Current Anthropology, Biological Abstracts, and EMBASE.

According to the 2011 edition of the Journal Citation Reports, this journal is ranked first in the Behavioral Sciences category and third in the Neurosciences category.
