Weather and Climate

Weather: The elements of the atmosphere such as clouds, precipitation, heat, cold, winds, and air pressure that impact us on a daily basis.

Climate: Weather over a long period of time. 30yrs of data is recorded for a station to determine its climate. Climate is the temperature and moisture of an area.

An example of the difference in climate can be seen in the desert southwest of the United States. It is classified as being dry and warm but on occasion can have thunderstorms and snow.

Another example is the middle part of the United States. In the 1930’s they had prolonged periods of dry and warm weather, did this make them become a desert during this time? Some people would say yes, but for climate reasons no.

A Person who studies the weather is known as a Meteorologist. A person who studies the climate is known as a Climatologist. Both jobs work together to help prepare for the future.

To be a good meteorologist or weather forecaster, it is very important to understand the difference between weather and climate. This will help in preparing daily weather briefs or planning events in the future.
