The above graph highlights how the ENSO has an impact on water temps.

Northern Gulf of Mexico during EL-Nino: The first part of March during this EL-Nino cycle saw water temps in the 56-60F range, while the 8-14th saw water temps warm to the 60-64F range. By the third week of March temps had maintained 60-64F. The last week of March the temps dropped back to around 56-60F.

Northern Gulf of Mexico during LA-Nina: The first week of March saw water temps approach the 70-72F range, by the second week the temps remained in the 70-72F range, by the third week temps took off and were at 74-76F and to finish the month of March the temps had risen to around 80F.

Northern Gulf of Mexico during Normal: The first week of March saw temps in the range of 58-60F, the second week the temps had risen to 64-66F and the third week brought an increase to around 70-72F and to finish the month the temps had risen to 72-74F.

Final Summary: EL-Nino impacts the Northern Gulf with keeping the temps cooler and also in a smaller range from the coldest to warmest, while La-Nina temps are warm and just keep getting warmer. During the Normal phase the temps show a small gradual increase over the month.
