Entomophobia

Entomophobia, known also as insect phobia, is a specific phobia of one or more classes of insects. More specific cases include apiphobia (fear of bees) and myrmecophobia (fear of ants).

An entomophobic is expected to experience enough anxiety upon viewing or otherwise coming into contact with an insect that he or she experiences full-blown panic attacks. With the extreme and serious cases, the individual may lose consciousness for a short period of time. Uncontrollable weeping or strong desires to run away from the area are also common signs that signify an individual is suffering from this particular phobia.

Due to entomophilies symptoms being much like those related to other phobias and a variety of health ailments, it usually takes a trained healthcare professional to arrive at a verifiable entomophobia definition. In making that evaluation, the therapist of psychologist will seek to define entomophobia via observations of the symptoms that are apparent and what exact triggers are required to produce each symptom. This makes it possible to determine if the individual is suffering from a general fear of insects and crawling creatures, or if the individual is suffering from a more specific phobia of some form.

Once the professional diagnosis is accomplished, it is possible to begin an effective entomophobia treatment series that is designated to address the degree of severity that is exhibited by the patient. Much like other phobias, the treatments normally make use of both ongoing therapy and counseling coupled with the usage of medications to offer some degree of relief from the symptoms. Medication can help to minimize the frequency and the strength of panic attacks upon seeing an insect, while the therapy can often identify the underlying causes and eventually defuse their power to trigger a reaction.
