Chicago police sergeant, Louis R. Vitullo, focused his career in the city’s crime lab and eventually because chief microanalyst. He created an organized method by which to collect and analyze evidence in sexual assault cases. The tools necessary to follow this process are all contained together in a standardized kit, originally called a Vitullo kit. Today, they are more commonly referred to as SAEK or rape kits.

Louis Vitullo died on January 3, 2006 at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, IL.
