Bushman’s Friend, Brachyglottis repanda

Brachyglottis repanda or Bushman’s Friend is indigenous to New Zealand. Growing from 13 to 15 feet tall, this bushy tree features large leaves with a downy underside. The leaves have been referred to as the “Bushman’s toilet paper”. The plant was once used for a variety of medicinal purposes including treating wounds and sores and the gum was chewed to disguise bad breath. However, the gum is poisonous when swallowed.
