Blue Grama, Bouteloua gracilis

Blue Grama is an indigenous perennial grass in North America ranging in color from green to a greenish grey with a long life span in warm conditions. It can be found in southern parts of Canada through the Midwestern United States and down into Mexico. Blue grama can thrive in a variety of topographic regions and soil textures. The plant ranges in height from 6 to 12 inches with a root span of 12 to 18 inches growing from 3 to 6 feet deep.

Blue Grama can be grown from seed, but the process is slow and fickle based on the moisture levels and temperature of the soil. Seeds that are dispersed by the wind tend to only travel a few yards. Therefore propagation relies heavily on insects, birds and other animals for dispersion at a greater distance. For the best results, seedlings should be planted away from adult plants which can prevent them from getting enough water.
