Mexican Blue Palm, Brahea armata

Brahea armata or Mexican Blue Palm is also known as the Blue Hesper Palm and grows in Baja, California and in Savannah, Georgia. An ornamental plant, it grows to 49 feet in height and features a broad trunk, blue tinted leaves measuring 3 – 6.5 feet in width with 3 foot petioles and small brown elliptical fruits measuring 0.7 – 0.9 inches in length. Seeds from these fruits were once a regular part of the Cocopah people’s diets. This species can be found growing along riverbeds, arroyos and even in rock formations. It can flourish in versatile growing conditions like in full sunlight or in shade, in warm or very cold temperatures and can tolerate drought conditions.
