Nursery Web Spider

The Nursery Web Spider (Pisaura mirabilis) is a species of spider found in the family Pisauridae. The adult is 0.39 to 0.59 inches long (females generally larger than the males).

The male has been observed to feign death (pretending to be dead by remaining motionless), while holding food in its mouth. If a female approaches to steal the food away, the male springs to life and tries to mate with the female. This method gives the males a 40% success increase in achieving copulation.
