The Redbone Coonhound is an American hunting breed developed in the 1800s from Foxhounds and Bloodhounds. It was bred to hunt raccoon, but is also used for hunting bear, bobcat, and cougar. They are highly agile and have an acute sense of smell allowing them to hunt in swamplands, on mountains, and in the water.

The breed stands 21 to 27 inches tall and it weighs 45 to 70 pounds. Its weight is proportional to its size and bone structure. Its build is lean and muscular with a deep chest, strong, long legs and a proudly-held head and tail. The face of the breed has a begging expression with sad brown eyes and long ears. The coat of the breed is short and smooth. The breed originally had a black saddleback, but it was bred out by the beginning of the 1900s. The coat of the Redbone Coonhound is now a solid, rich red, making it the only solid colored coonhound.

The Redbone Coonhound makes an excellent family pet when properly socialized and trained. It is an affectionate breed, but due to its size it can be overwhelming. It is energetic and needs plenty of activity and exercise. The breed may take longer to mature than other breeds, both physically and mentally, leading to some difficulties with training. The Redbone Coonhound is independent, intelligent, and an excellent problem solver. They can take whatever is thrown at them.
