Mitchell, Edgar

Edgar Mitchell was an American pilot, engineer, and astronaut. He was also the sixth person to have walked on the moon. He was born Edgar Dean Mitchell, D.Sc. on born September 17, 1930 in Hereford, Texas. During his childhood, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America where he achieved its second highest rank, Life Scout. He attended Carnegie Institute of Technology and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial management in 1952. The following year he joined the US Navy and trained to pilot and fly off the aircraft carriers USS Bon Homme Richard and USS Ticonderoga. While on active duty in the Navy, he earned a Master of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and a Doctor of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Later, Mitchell would go on to receive honorary doctorates from the New Mexico State University, the University of Akron, Carnegie Mellon University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Mitchell was selected to be an astronaut in 1966 and was seconded to NASA from the Navy. He was designated as backup lunar module pilot for Apollo 10, and then flew as lunar module pilot on Apollo 14. He launched and spent nine hours working on the lunar surface in the Fra Mauro Highlands region. During this time, he became the sixth person to walk on the Moon. Although Apollo 14 was Mitchell’s only spaceflight, he remained with NASA until he retired in 1972.
Mitchell continued his space and science interests after his retirement. In 1973, he founded the nonprofit Institute of Noetic Sciences to conduct and sponsor research into areas including consciousness research and psychic events. He also believes in remote healing and claims that he was healed of kidney cancer at a distance. Mitchell has publicly expressed his opinions that the majority of UFOs recorded belong to visitors from other planets, and that UFOs have been the topic of false information so that attention can be drawn away and confusion set in so that the truth is not revealed. On April 19, 1996, Mitchell was interviewed by Dateline NBC, when he claimed to have met with officials from three countries who claimed to have had personal encounters with extraterrestrials. He further claimed that UFOs had provided information helpful to the U.S. government. On July 23, 2008, Edgar Mitchell was interviewed on Kerrang Radio by Nick Margerrison, when he noted that aliens have contacted humans several times, but that governments have hidden the truth for over 60 years.

Mitchell lives in West Palm Beach, Florida and is currently the Advisory Board Chairman of the Institute for Cooperation in Space.
