<abstractStory>Despite record-breaking sales for a handful of popular franchises, a market study released Thursday reported that the video-game industry suffered an 8% slump in overall sales for 2011.</abstractStory>

Despite record-breaking sales for a handful of popular franchises, a market study released Thursday reported that the video-game industry suffered an 8% slump in overall sales for 2011.

According to the report by consumer marketing research group NPD Inc., gamers spent just over $17 billion on videogames and hardware last year compared with the $18.6 billion they dished out in 2010.

Total sales for 2011 were split roughly 50-50 between games and hardware (i.e. consoles and peripheral devices like game pads) as was the case in 2010 as well.

The problem was thus initially attributed not to a wanting selection of games and consoles but rather to an overall decline in entertainment spending due to high unemployment rates and stagnant economies in the western world.

The holiday season proved particularly disappointing for creators of traditional video games and gaming devices. Usually the most robust shopping month of the year, December sales figures registered an even steeper decline compared to the previous year, plummeting 21% from $5.1 in 2010 to $4 billion.

“Lots of people rushed into stores on Black Friday to buy games, but they disappeared in the first three weeks of December,” explained Michael Pachter to The Los Angeles Times (LA Times), an analyst at Wedbush Securities.

“The stores were empty. They only came back during the week just before Christmas. Consoles in particular are way down. It’s weird, but people don’t seem to see them as gifts anymore.”

Across the board, gaming consoles fared even worse. Despite significant price-slashing by the makers of Wii, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360, sales of the gaming units grossed some 28% less during the 2011 holiday season compared with the previous year. In all, consumers bought a modest 6.3 million consoles in the last month of 2011—some 2.1 million fewer than the previous year.

And it isn’t just that 2010 was such a bang-up year for game manufacturers. According to Pachter, these were the most meager sales figures the industry has seen since 2005.

But several analysts have noted that the gaming industry’s lost sales revenue hasn’t simply disappeared. Much of that money has been spent instead on mobile and online social games, said another NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

Sales for these increasingly popular forms of gaming were not reflected in the report, Frazier explained, thus giving the initial impression that people simply weren’t spending as much on games, period. But she says that when these other varieties of gaming are calculated into the statistics, total sales for 2011 were only down by about 2 percent compared to 2010.

“December was very rough. Because of the great slate of content that came to market during the fourth quarter, I had expected December sales to represent a larger portion of total-year sales than what occurred,” said Frazier.

“This year, December accounted for just 23% of annual sales, while the average for the past 10 years has been 28%.”

Viewed in this light, the struggles of the traditional gaming industry seem to reflect a shift in consumer spending patterns rather than just a reduction in absolute spending.

And not all game publishers had a dismal year. Ubisoft Entertainment was able to boast three of 2011’s top-ten games while Electronic Arts’s Battlefield 3 and Madden NFL12 commanded another two positions on the list.

Yet the undisputed heavy-weight champion of 2011 was Activision Blizzard Inc.

In November the company’s wildly popular franchise “Call of Duty” released its newest installment “Modern Warfare 3” to a fan base that seems to grow exponentially larger with each new addition to the series. The first-person shooter game smashed all previous records, earning $1 billion in just 16 days and dethroning the film industry’s legendary flick “Avatar” which took 17 days to hit the billion-dollar mark.

And Activision Publishing wasn’t the only company to make lemonade in a year of lemons. Looking at the combined sales for games and consoles, Xbox led the pack by leaps and bounds. Of the $17 billion in total industry sales, $2.1 billion went to Xbox consoles and another $4.6 billion to Xbox games, giving the Microsoft-engineered gaming unit command of some 40% of the total market.

The breakdown shows that $2.1 billion was spent on the Xbox console in 2011, and the other $4.6 billion was on games. The entire video game sector in 2011 racked up $17.02 billion. That sounds like a huge amount of money, but it is an 8% drop from money spend in 2010. The total spent on the gaming segment in 2010 was $18.6 billion.

Ubisoft’s senior marketing VP Tony Key said that it was in fact a rough and competitive year for the industry as a whole. But, he added, the market was not impenetrable for creative game designers.

“If you innovate and you bring something fun, you can still win,” said Key.

Assembly workers at Foxconn Technology’s Wuhan plant, where they build Microsoft’s Xbox 360, threatened to kill themselves if their wages and working conditions did not improve.

CNET reports that the workers at the Xbox factory grew disgruntled after being denied pay raises. Then on January 2, the employees reportedly said they would jump off the roof of the factory if their demands were not met.

Microsoft is conducting an investigation into the matter, but a deal had been reached with the employees. According to a Microsoft representative, “It is our understanding that the worker protest was related to staffing assignments and transfer policies, not working conditions. Due to regular production adjustments, Foxconn offered the workers the option of being transferred to alternative production lines or resigning and receiving all salary and bonuses due, according to length of service. After the protest, the majority of workers chose to return to work. A smaller portion of those employees elected to resign.”

Suicides at Foxconn are not new. Over the last two years 16 Foxconn employees have committed suicide at the Shenzhen, China factory. And three others have attempted suicide. This has prompted the company to install “suicide nets” around the factory to discourage employees from jumping off of buildings.

Worker discontent in Chinese factories has grown in the last months as they cope with rising costs, scarce credit and declining orders from Europe, the United States and domestic companies. And to further complicate matters as the Lunar New Year approaches, migrant workers quit and return home temporarily before looking for better employment.

Foxconn is a unit of Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co that makes iPads, iPhones, Xboxes and any other gadget where the brand designer wants to hold down manufacturing costs.

Strong holiday sales are being reported by Sony for its range of PlayStation gaming platforms with a total of 6.5 million PlayStation 2/3/PSP/Vita units sold worldwide. The PS Vita alone, introduced early in December was purchased by nearly 500,000 gamers in Asia alone.

The elderly (by game standards) PSP, continued to sell 1.6 million units worldwide and separate from the 6.5 million systems overall was the sale of 1.6 million of the motion control add-on Sony Move.

The PlayStation 3 sold almost 4 million units, bringing Sony closer to its fiscal year-end goal of 15 million for the five-year old gaming powerhouse. The PS2 continues puttering along and enjoying, “robust sales in emerging countries,” reports Joseph Volpe for Engadget.

Boosting Sony’s newest platform, they claim that PS Vita owners can choose between 24 different games at the moment and that 70 additional titles are currently in development.

The company’s newest video game system will hit Europe, Australia, and America on February 22, 2012 with the 3G/Wi-Fi model of the Vita costing $299, with the choice of two data plans. There is a $14.99 plan that offers 250MB data, and a $25 plan that gives you 2GB of data.

Both plans will be month-to-month and will not require a long-term contract, reports Bonnie Cha for CNET. A free game download is included with the purchase of the Vita along with a data plan.

The Vita, already available in Japan, features a 5-inch OLED capacitive touch screen, a rear touch panel, an ARM Cortex-A9 core (quad-core) CPU, and a SGX543MP4+ GPU. The Vita will launch with an impressive list of games here in the US but its use of proprietary media might hold it back.

Christmas not only saw an increase in tablet and smartphone sales and activations. Rovio reported this week that 6.5 million users downloaded Angry Birds on Christmas Day alone.

Ville Heijari, of Rovio, told AllThingsD, “We’re really excited to have such a massive number of new people get acquainted with Angry Birds over the holidays — we have exciting new releases lined up for 2012, and can’t wait to introduce them to the public.”

Rovio’s download count includes the original Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio, both the paid and free downloads. According to Mashable.com many of the downloads could be repeats by the same customer, but the number of downloads is too similar to the number of activations.

The number of downloads for Christmas 2011 is a dramatic increase over Christmas 2010, which recorded only 2 million downloads, including Android and iOS devices

MSNBC’s In-Game notes that the one-day download volume for Christmas day is only a drop in the bucket compared to the 500 million total downloads since the gaming franchise started just over two-years ago.

The Japanese video game giant Nintendo announced this week that its 2011 sales of Nintendo’s 3DS hardware had surpassed the 4 million mark in the United States alone.

Market analysts say Nintendo’s sales figures for the handheld game console were given a significant boost thanks to new versions of two of Nintendo’s most beloved video game legacies: Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land. According to their own in-house sales figures, both games sold over a million copies each in the U.S.

The company blames a somewhat lackluster list of game titles for initially weak sales of the 3DS console when it was first released in March of 2011.

The unit’s high ticket price also appears to have deterred many potential customers. Sales for the console really began to really take off when Nintendo dropped the price of the 3DS hardware from $250 to $170 in August.

Sales for the company’s groundbreaking full-size console Wii also continued to hold their own. While down significantly from 2010’s phenomenal 7 million units sales, the interactive console still managed to sell 4.5 million units in its fifth year on the market, defending its title as Nintendo’s best-selling console. The Japanese company also says they will introduce Wii’s successor later this year, the Wii U.

A sequel to another classic game title The Legend of Zelda also buoyed sales in 2011. Sales for the newest addition to the franchise The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii managed to break the 1 million mark in less than two months since its release in late November.

In an uncharacteristic shift in marketing strategies, Nintendo recently announced that it will also soon begin allowing loyal 3DS gamers to download addition levels to certain games once they have mastered all the original levels.

Although Nintendo’s stock fell over 50% in 2011 to $16.94 per share, the company has a long history of bouncing back and reinventing itself in response to changing consumer preferences. And many industry insiders suspect that 2012 may see Nintendo reclaiming much of 2011’s lost market value.

Nintendo is reportedly working on an app store for its next gaming console the "Wii U".

The new console will implement an app store that surpasses the current online stores that Nintendo uses with its DSi and Wii consoles, according to a report by The Daily.

"Wii U owners will be able to use apps that operate on the Wii U itself, such as MLB.TV, and others that run independently on the Wii U’s controller," the report said.

The new console will launch in the second half of 2012 and will replace the current Wii consoles. Its controller is a tablet-style device with a 6.2-inch screen.

The Daily reports that it was "unknown whether Nintendo plans to monetize its app store with a points system, which it currently uses for WiiWare and DSiWare, or with a more Apple-like pay-to-play system".

The Wii U will be backwards compatible with the Wii, being capable of utilizing Wii peripherals like the Wii Remote, Wii MotionPlus, and Wii Balance Board.

Also unlike its predecessor, the new Wii console will be able to output in high-definition format.

Microsoft recently released a newly redesigned, video-packed Xbox dashboard earlier this month, however some users have been finding issues connecting online with reported errors codes ,“801540B7” or “80070571”, when they try to download their Xbox Live profile, Kyle Orland reports for MSNBC. Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and promised to, “resolve ... as soon as possible.”

“We have recently identified an Xbox Live profile data error that results in Error Code ‘801540B7’ for a small number of Xbox Live members,” somebody on the Xbox Live team told Joystiq.

“The error instructs users to attempt to re-download their Xbox Live profile and directs them to customer service support for further assistance. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused to our loyal Xbox Live members and are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”

Many Xbox owners however, Damon Poeter reports for PC Mag, are not happy about the wait, especially with the school break on-going leaving many players with free time to complain. The Verge points to a thread on the Xbox support forums where one user quotes an Xbox tech support representative saying it will take on average “approximately 10-12 days for the escalation team to respond.”

A massive overhaul of Xbox Live began earlier this month, beginning with the new-look dashboard and the integration of its Bing search engine with the Kinect peripheral for its Xbox 360 consoles.

Significant additions in the works include a voice search capability that will work with the Xbox Live Marketplace, Zune Video, and selected content partners.

In addition to the technical additions to its gaming platform, Microsoft plans to add content and apps in the coming days from new entertainment partners, including EPIX, ESPN, Hulu Plus, Netflix, and MSNBC’s Today, with many more deals being readied for additional content in 2012.

In recent years, Facebook has become an increasingly popular forum for people who see gaming less as a passion and more as a way to socialize and connect with friends. This week, the multi-billion member social network released a list of its most-played games for 2011.

According to the list, the new game Gardens of Time overtook last year’s winner CityVille, which was bumped down a couple notches to third place. The virtual city-building game Sims Social by EA also beat out the FarmVille sequel to take the silver.

Gardens of Time requires gamers to battle the world’s “sinister forces” by hopping into a time machine searching through history for various hidden objects.

Facebook determined its winner by examining which games had over 100,000 active monthly users and then screening the contenders according to which one had the highest user-satisfaction rating.

“The average game player on Facebook played more than three different gaming titles each month and played more than half the days they visited the site,” wrote a Facebook representative on the website.

The company Zynga had a whole array games in the top-10 list, with Indiana Jones Adventure World coming in fifth place, Words With Friends in sixth, and Empires & Allies in eighth. They did not, however, manage to capture either of the much-coveted top two spots on the list.

Zygna, which went public this year, also had Facebook’s most popular casino game, Zygna Poker. Runners up included DoubleDown Casino, Bingo Blitz, Slotomania-Slot Machines, and Diamond Dash.

Here’s a complete list of their top 10 games:

1. Gardens of Time (By Playdom)
2. The Sims Social (By EA)
3. Cityville (By Zynga)
4. DoubleDown Casino (by DoubleDown Interactive)
5. Indiana Jones Adventure World (By Zynga)
6. Words With Friends (By Zynga)
7. Bingo Blitz (By Buffalo Studios)
8. Empires & Allies (By Zynga)
9. Slotomania-Slot Machines (By Playtika)
10. Diamond Dash (By wooga)

In addition to the top-10 list, the social network also spotlighted some rising stars in the gaming world, including Kixeye’s Battle Pirates, Kabam’s Dragons of Atlantis, and Rock You’s Gourmet Ranch.

<abstractStory>The Sony Corporation issued a public apology on Tuesday, Dec. 20 to customers who have purchased their new handheld videogame console, the Playstation Vita.</abstractStory>

The Sony Corporation issued a public apology on Tuesday, Dec. 20 to customers who have purchased their new handheld videogame console, the Playstation Vita. Just days after its release, Sony’s Japanese division has already received a deluge of complaints concerning the new unit’s malfunctioning software and hardware.

After selling some 321,000 units in the first two days after its release, game-enthusiasts quickly began to lodge reports about faulty touch screens and frequent software crashes. While a few glitches are nothing unusual for a brand new system, gaming experts and bloggers say that the large volume of complaints about Sony’s Vita registered over social media like Twitter and YouTube is a bit troubling.

Yet given the sheer amount of technology crammed into the mini console, it’s not surprising that users are running into a few snags. The Vita comes equipped with a gyroscope, an electronic compass and an accelerometer tucked away beneath its 5-inch OLED touch screen, as well as a pair of front- and rear-mounted cameras.

Concerned that the mounting negative Internet web-gossip could prove damaging to the unit’s sales figures, Sony issued an apologetic official statement via its Playstation website.

“Currently, our information center regarding PlayStation Vita as well as our usual customer service center are receiving many enquiries. We apologize if your phone isn’t connecting immediately,” it read.

Sony went on to state that a number of the reported issues can be fixed with basic patches that can be done by the user without sending the unit back to the manufacturer. The company has also promised that a list of the most common problems and quick solutions is forthcoming.

Industry insiders who have followed the development of the mini gaming console say that Sony isn’t the first company to run into post-release problems like this. As Christopher Dring of the gaming magazine MCV explained, Microsoft had similar problems with the early version of its Xbox 360. Yet he says Microsoft managed to overcome these complications to eventually make Xbox the best-selling game console in the world.

While the Japanese publisher Enterbrain reports that 321,400 Vitas were sold in two days, Sony has not yet formally discovered its sales figures. If Enterbrain’s numbers are right however, it would put the Sony’s sales figures for the mini-console some 50,000 units behind the record set by Nintendo’s 3DS in February of this year.

Still, industry experts say that if Sony can manage to quickly overcome these initial glitches, then the Vita stands a good chance of overtaking the 3DS in terms of total sales volume. They’ve noted that the weather was particularly bad in Japan over the weekend, keeping many would-be shoppers from hitting the stores. Moreover, sales for the 3DS, though initially strong, quickly fell off after a few weeks on the market.

Part of Sony’s strategy for boosting long-term sales has been the release of 24 games alongside the device--a large number of options considering that most new consoles only have a handful of compatible games when they first hit the shelves. And by the time the console goes international in February, Sony says gamers will already have 33 titles to choose from. What’s more, customers in the US, England, Canada and Latin America will also get to choose between two different versions of the mini console, one with wi-fi and one with wi-fi and 3G capabilities.

“We are incredibly pleased with the success of the Japanese launch of PlayStation Vita in which all pre-orders were immediately sold out and that enthusiasm has continued since launch with sales well on track,” said David Wilson, chief of Sony’s PR division in the UK David Wilson.

“We are confident we will continue to accelerate the momentum as we approach the European launch on February 22nd.”

While the international release will not come in time for Christmas, Sony says that the staggered release of the Playstation Vita is giving them the opportunity to iron-out all the bugs, which will allow them to roll-out a problem-free product to European and American markets.

“I don’t think Sony would like to describe Japan as a test-run, but it does give them an opportunity to fix problems with the consoles,” explained Dring, a fact that he believes will be “reassuring” to potential customers in the rest of world.

Gamers around the world have registered their judgment on the enormously hyped video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 by dishing out the dollars. According to the game’s distributor Activision Publishing, the first-person shooter has already been catapulted to the status of pop-culture legend, reaching the $1 billion sales mark in just 16 days.

And it isn’t just video game records that MW3 is demolishing. It has even surpassed sales for James Cameron’s visual-trip sci-fi film “Avatar” which took 17 days to hit the $1 billion mark. And it blew out of the water the record of its predecessor Call of Duty: Black Ops which took 7 weeks to reach the golden sales mark.

Activision Blizzard says that the key to its success lies in consistently building on the franchise’s strengths. Rather than attempt to radically alter the style of the game, the company has continually expanded and improved those aspects of the game that players seem to love, thus building its fan base and recruiting new gamers along the way.

“Really knowing the taste of your customers is something we do really well,” explained Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick to Nick Biltin of the New York Times. “We’ve had so much sustained success with this franchise because we continue to look at what the audience is interested in. We continually make sure we are delivering products that have audience appeal.”

Modern Warfare is the ninth installment in the Call of Duty series and is available on almost every popular game console, including Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Xbox, Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii.

Research studies show that in recent years the number of people opting out of the cinema and picking up a game pad continues to grow—a trend that has accelerated as the social-networking dimension of modern videogames and digital media in general has continued to expand. And few companies have anticipated and capitalized on this trend more successfully than the Call of Duty creators.

“Modern Warfare 3, and other games by us, have a much broader appeal than they have had in the past, with the social nature of the game offering a different type of interactive experience that has not existed before,” Kotick said in a telephone interview with the New York Times. “As the number of new game consoles has expanded, along with the audience, it’s capturing a new audience that in the past has not considered playing video games.”

According to financial figures released in November, Activision’s profits have tripled year-on-year in the three months to the end of September—and that’s without including sales from Modern Warfare 3. The company also recently introduced a social gaming network companion called Call of Duty: Elite which has already attracted over six million subscribers worldwide and continues to grow.

Commenting on the unprecedented success of the game series, Kotick stated that: “Call of Duty as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture. [It] is now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and the National Football League that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release.”

And to him who has, more shall be given, says Charles Bae of the digital advertising agency Rokkan. Observing the positive feedback-loop that continues to fuel the game’s popularity and expand its player base, Bae notes: “It’s been riding its own wave. When you have a game that big and that has that much hype around it, you’re bound to attract new players.”

In a recent press-release, Activision reported that its community of Call of Duty gamers boasts over 30 million players—more than the total combined populations of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris and Madrid.
