Carina Nebula

Atlas Image mosaic, covering 0.70° × 0.90° on the sky, of the Carina (Keyhole) Nebula. This spectacular region of the Milky Way Galaxy, also known as NGC 3372, contains an unusually high concentration of young massive stars, many located in star clusters, at about 2300 pc (7500 light years). The region is the result of a burst of star formation ~3 Million years ago. Star formation in this region is still ongoing! 2000 May 31-June 13 Posted on: 31 Mar, 2003
