Galaxy Cluster Abell 3558

Atlas Image mosaic, covering 0.5° × 0.5° on the sky, of the galaxy cluster Abell 3558, also known as Shapley 8. This is a rich cluster, which has been the subject of study at a number of wavelengths. The cluster is dominated by a central giant cD galaxy (the brightest galaxy near the center of the 2MASS image), which, interestingly enough, also lies near the center of the larger Shapley concentration, or supercluster, of 25 clusters of galaxies, including Abell 3558. 2000 Feb 2-8 Posted on: 31 Mar, 2003
