Latvia is one of the three Baltic states that joined the European Union (EU-25) last May. It gained it's independency in 1991 from the USSR. The largest part of the country consists of low lying plains, and about 47 percent of the land is covered by forests. Latvia has cool summers and mild winters, during which snow remains about 2-4 months. The estimated population of Latvia is about 2.300.000, about one third is living in Riga, the capital, and only one third in rural areas.
