This Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS, orbit 12514), acquired on 08 August 2004 over the Nubian Region (bands combination 7,5,2), located at southern Egypt and northern Sudan.
The land of Nubia is a desert divided by the river Nile. A large portion of the northern part of ancient Nubia currently is found under the reservoir formed behind Egypt's High Dam at Aswan.
Along the south west coasts (lower left), the image shows the Bab el Mandeb strait, between the Arabian Peninsula and Africa, connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. The east coast portion of the image covers the Yemen and Saudi Arabia states. A sandstorm is visible along the west coast (center image).
