Tajikistan, the smallest country in Central Asia with an area of 143100 square kilometers and independent republic since 1991, is shown in this Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS)
As can be seen in the image, this region is extremely mountainous and almost half of the country lies above an elevation of 3000 meters. Mountain glaciers feed Tajikistan's numerous swift-flowing rivers and streams. The largest lake of this country, Lake Karakul, is located in the northeast (in black color in the image) at an elevation of about 4000 meters.
