This MODIS Terra image from July 4, 2006, shows Western Sahara, a territory in northwestern Africa. The arid desert flatlands of Western Sarhara make it one of the most sparsely populated places in the world.
Control of this territory is currently in dispute by Morocco, which borders it to the north, and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Other countries that border Western Sahara include Algeria in the northeast, Mauritania to the east and south, (you can see it at the bottom right of the image) - the Atlantic Ocean is to the west.
