Bolivia, shown in this MODIS Terra image which was acquired July 4, 2006, is a landlocked country in central South America. It is bordered by Paraguay and Argentina on the south, Chile and Peru on the west, and Brazil on the north and east.

At the top left of the image is the Brazilian state of Acre – one large city is visible, Rio Branco. The right top of the image is taken up by the state of Rondônia, also in Brazil. Rodonia is covered mostly by jungle of the Amazon Rainforest, but about one-fifth of the state has been deforested since intensive settlement began in the 1970s. The rows of parallel and perpendicular lines at the top center of the image are farms in Rodonia.

At far left center, is a large lake, right on the border of Peru and Bolivia – this is the famous Lake Titicaca, located high up in the Andes Mountains, which run down the left side of this image. More than 25 rivers empty into Titicaca, and the lake has 41 islands, some of which are densely populated.

South of Lake Titcaca is a greenish looking lake, called Lake Poopo. The capital of Bolivia, La Paz, is located between the two lakes, also in the mountains.

The black lines denote country borders, and the red dots represent active fires in the region.
