The Lesser Sunda Islands

Credit: Jeff Schmaltz; MODIS team; NASA, Posted on: Wednesday, 13 September 2006, 06:22 CDT Download full size image

This MODIS Terra image shows the Lesser Sunda Islands, which form the southern border of Indonesia with Australia and stretch for 1,200 kilometers from the western island of Lombok on the left to the eastern tip of Timor, the largest island in the image.

The islands lie in the Indian Ocean and are a group of islands in the middle-south part of the Malay Archipelago. Together with the Greater Sunda Islands to the west they make up the Sunda Islands.

MODIS also detected several fires - they are marked with red dots.
