This image of Saudi Arabia was captured by the MODIS on the Terra satellite on October 19, 2006. Saudi Arabia occupies 80% of the Arabian Peninsula, which lies between the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. The landscape of Saudi Arabia is quite varied, though in this image the land looks quite arid.

The Rub Al Khali Desert runs through the southern portion of Saudi Arabia. But the area shown in this image is not totally uninhabited - the capital city of Riyadh is visible as a gray patch located near the center of the image, on the large plateau. Riyadh is home to 20% of the country's population. Also visible in this image, to the east, is part of the Persian Gulf, and the country of Qatar - a snall peninsula that juts out into the Persian Gulf.
