This MODIS Aqua image, captured November 17, 2006, primarily shows the country of Turkey. Turkey stretches across the Anatolian peninsula in southwestern Asia and the Balkan region of southeastern Europe, essentially forming a bridge between Europe and Asia. Eight countries border Turkey, and we can see two of them in this image. The black lines denote country borders and below Turkey is Syria (west) and Iraq (east).

Near the left center of the image is a large, light brown oval shape. This is Lake Tuz, the second biggest lake in Turkey at 80 km long and 50 km wide. Most of the year, it is a shallow salt lake - but during the summer the water dries up leaving a 30 cm thick salt layer! During the winter, part of the salt gets re-dissolved by precipitation and other runoff water. There are three salt mines in operation that produce 70% of Turkey's salt!
