A large plume of Saharan Desert dust (tan pixels) was blowing northward off the coast of Libya and spreading over much of the Mediterranean Sea on October 3, 2003. Part of Tunisia’s northeastern coastline is visible along the left edge of this scene, and the Italian island of Sicily is located in the upper left. This true-color image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite. The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
