Smoke plumes rise from King Island in this MODIS Aqua image, captured March 10, 2007. King Island is located between Tasmania and Victoria, Australia, but is actually one of the islands the makes up the state of Tasmania.
MODIS detected the fires burning on Tasmania as it was flown over the region. The active fires are shown by the red dots. The fire started about three weeks ago on the east coast of King Island and as of March 9, had burnt more than 11,000 hectares of the Lavinia State Reserve and farmland.
