Ice on Lake Erie

Credit: Jeff Schmaltz; MODIS team; NASA, Posted on: Tuesday, 20 March 2007, 07:49 CDT Download full size image

The cold and snowy Great Lakes region is shown in this image, acquired by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on March 9, 2007. Both the US and Canada are represented in this image, with the Ontario, Canada border cutting through Lakes Ontario (upper right) and Erie (center). The black lines show the country and state borders. South of Lake Ontario is New York. Continuing clockwise are the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Viriginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan, which is separated from Ontario by Lake Huron.

There is greater ice coverage on Lake Erie compared to the adjacent Lakes Ontario and Huron due to the fact that the water is more shallow in Lake Erie, allowing the water temperatures to cool and freeze more quickly in winter.
