The Mississippi River Delta

A clear day in April gives us a nice look at the Mississippi River Delta in this image acquired by the MODIS on the Terra satellite.

Soil and sediments from the Mississippi River are what has built up the river delta area. Over the past 5000 years, the coastline of south Louisiana has actually advanced some 35 miles into the Gulf of Mexico, according to Wikipedia. The brownish sediment around the mouth of the river is easily visible in this satellite image.

The red dots are the locations of active fires in the region.
