Florida

Thanks to a clear day in Florida, the MODIS on the Aqua satellite was able to capture this shot, on November 4, 2007. A few fires are visible, each marked with a red dot. Lake Okeechobee stands out as a large round dark patch near the center of the state. Just south of the lake are the two fires. South of the fires are darker patches of land, which are the Everglades National Park, and the Big Cypress National Preserve. East of the Everglades, on the Atlantic coast is Miami and its surrounding cities - it looks like a long gray patch.

Off the south tip of Florida is the Florida Bay and the many islands that make up the Florida keys. In the water are colonies of marine phytoplankton whose chlorophyll and other pigments reflect an intense blue-green color.
