Dust Over the Cape Verde Islands

Credit: Jeff Schmaltz; MODIS team; NASA, Posted on: Friday, 11 January 2008, 07:49 CST Download full size image

Dust plumes blew off the west coast of Africa while a large haze of dust hung over Cape Verde on January 8, 2008. The MODIS on NASA's Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. This image shows relatively small, distinct dust plumes blowing straight west off the coast of Mauritania. Mauritania is just south of Western Sahara and north of Senegal.

It also shows a large amorphous plume lingering over the Cape Verde Islands. The dust hanging over this archipelago was likely blown in that direction earlier; MODIS detected dust storm activity off the coast on the previous day.
