Ash Plume from the Chaiten Volcano, Chile

The Chaiten Volcano first erupted on May 2, 2008 after 9000 years of dormancy. The plume from the volcano has been enormous, stretching across Argentina, as shown in this image. In today's featured image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on May 28, 2008, the plume is being blown north by the wind.

Gray ash covers the ground around the volcano. Earth Observatory has a story about how the town of Chaiten continues to be affected by the eruption.
