The state of Nevada is featured in this image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on June 9, 2008. Nevada is bordered by California in the west, and Utah (top) and Arizona (bottom) in the east.
There are many features in this region that are visible from space. The large swath of dark green and brown running down the left side of the image are the Sierra Nevada mountains, which are mostly within California. The dark grey-blue patch on the eastern edge of the mountains is Lake Tahoe. The California/Nevada border runs right through the lake. Slightly north and east of Tahoe is Pyramid lake. South and east of Tahoe is Walker Lake, and even further south, is the volcanically-formed Mono Lake. Near the bottom center of the image is a sort of "Y" shaped lake - this is Lake Mead - and the city of Las Vegas is just west of it.
