This image, captured by the MODIS on the Terra satellite shows the Queen Elizabeth Islands in Canada, on July 2, 2008. The Queen Elizabeth Islands (formerly the Parry Islands) are the northernmost in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. They are split between the Canadian provinces of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.
The Queen Elizabeth Islands also abut Greenland in the east. Towards the right side of the image you can see a black gap of water running vertically through the brown and snowy land - this gap is what separates Greenland (right side of the image) from Ellesmere Island (center). Ellesmere, the largest island in the Queen Elizabeth archipelago, is actually the 10th largest island in the world. It is covered by the Arctic Cordillera mountain range.
