More Fires in California

Lightening from storms in late June sparked dozens of wildfires in California. This image by the MODIS on the Terra satellite shows the fires on July 8, 2008. The red dots show the location of the active fires. Many of the fires have visible gray plumes of smoke rising from them, and a great deal of smoke has drifted out over the Pacific Ocean.

Visible are the Gap and Indian fires (in southern California) and the Basin Complex Fire (near Big Sur, south of Salinas). In northern California near Lake Tahoe is the American River Complex Fire. North of that, is the Cub Complex Fire, and towards the west is the Yolla Bolly Complex fire. There are seven fires alone in the Yolla Bolly Complex.
