Fires, probably related to land clearing or agriculture, were burning across a broad area of Argentina (left) and Paraguay (top center) on July 16, 2008, when the MODIS)on the Aqua satellite passed overhead and captured this image.
Places where the sensor detected active fires are marked in red. The wind was blowing from the north, spreading long plumes of smoke as well as dust from the shoreline of the large lake at image left. Fires are especially smoky in the floodplain of the Paraná River north of Bueno Aires. Buenos Aires is located on the southwestern shore of the muddy Rio de la Plata Estuary. This estuary is formed by the combination of the Uruguay and Parana Rivers. Uruguay is located north of this estuary, on the right side of the image.
