This image, captured on August 22, 2008 by the MODIS on the Terra satellite, shows the state of Maine in the US and the Maritimes in Canada. The Maritimes is a region of eastern Canada on the Atlantic coast - it consists of the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

Prince Edward Island is small and U-shaped. South of it is the long peninsula of Nova Scotia. Notable is the Bay of Fundy, located on its western side. The reddish coloration along the coastline of the Bay is due to sediment in the water caused by the tides. The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world - the water can rise and fall as much as 50 feet each day! During each tidal cycle, huge quantities of fine sediments are brought in to flood the coastal area. Much of the sediment remains in the sheltered areas along the coast, forming the famous red mudflats of the upper Bay.
