This Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) image shows Ukraine, the second largest country in Europe after Russia. Part of Romania is also seen in the bottom left part of the image. Dnieper River, flowing from the top right part of the image to empty into the Black Sea, is the most important traffic artery of Ukraine and the third longest river of Europe exceeded in length only by the Volga and Danube rivers. Flowing from west to east in the image is the Danube River forming a large delta (dark green colours in the image), which is a region of desolate marshes and swamps, broken by tree-covered elevations. The bright, turquoise-coloured swirls across the surface of the Black Sea, signify the presence of biological activity, increased by its isolation from the world's ocean and the extensive drainage network of rivers that empty into it.
