Fog and Snow in the Pacific Northwest

Huge banks of fog spread like blankets across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho in this true-color Aqua MODIS image from February 12, 2004. Snow dusts the Coast Ranges(west) and Rocky Mountains (east), the effect is a mixture of bright white and gray in sharp contrast with the deep green and brown snow-free ground. Meanwhile, the fog banks are a uniform white with little texture, and which obscure ground-features from sight. MODIS also detected a couple of fires in this scene; they are marked in bright red. A couple of the fires show visible smoke plumes drifting away in the wind.
