Caspian Sea

The deep blue waters of the Caspian Sea (center) dominate the center of this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Aqua satellite captured on April 9, 2004. The most dramatic feature of the scene is the colorful water in the shallow, northern part of the large lake. These blue and green swirls are probably a mixture of plant life, sediment, and organic matter washed in by the Volga River, whose delta is speckled with fires (red dots) at upper left. The snow-covered mountain range at left center is the Caucasus. Countries shown along the Caspian shoreline are (clockwise from top left) Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Azerbaijan.
